Drilled Shaft Installation

Drilled Shaft Foundations

A drilled shaft foundation is built in an excavated hole and filled with reinforced concrete. It can be part of an engineered solution for substantial structural loads, but successful construction starts with understanding what is below ground and how the excavation will stay stable.

Osborne Contractors installs drilled shafts for commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects across the Gulf Coast. Bring us the foundation plans and site information so the installation scope can be discussed alongside your project’s engineering requirements.

How Drilled Shafts Are Built

The general sequence includes excavating to the specified dimensions, preparing and checking the excavation, placing reinforcement and placing concrete. Groundwater and unstable soil can require casing or drilling fluid to support the hole. These choices affect how the work is performed and inspected. A dry excavation and a fluid-supported excavation require different construction procedures; the installation plan must suit the actual ground conditions and project specifications.

Plan the work around the excavation

Early planning should address the whole operation, including the space around each shaft. Identify the access route, available headroom, working-platform requirements, nearby utilities and the room available for reinforcing cages and concrete deliveries. Include excavation-spoil handling and any restrictions on truck movements or working hours in the bid discussion.

Ask who is responsible for layout, excavation inspection, material testing and any specified integrity or load testing. Establish the required records and approval points before work begins. Coordinating these responsibilities helps the general contractor see how shaft installation fits with adjacent trades, excavation work and the next foundation activity.

Drilled Shaft FAQs

Does a drilled shaft always need casing?

No. The need for casing or drilling fluid depends on excavation stability, groundwater and the specified construction method. A shaft that can be excavated dry at one location may require different support at another. The geotechnical information and installation plan guide that decision.

Are drilled shafts the same as auger cast piles?

They are different construction systems. A conventional drilled shaft is excavated before reinforcement and concrete placement. An auger cast pile is formed as grout or concrete is pumped through the auger during withdrawal. Comparing them requires review of the design, ground conditions and construction constraints.

Can the quote be based only on shaft diameter and depth?

Those dimensions are important, but they do not describe the full installation scope. Access, excavation support, reinforcing details, concrete placement, spoil handling, testing and schedule restrictions can also affect the work. Sending the drawings and specifications together makes competing proposals easier to compare.

GET A DRILLED SHAFT QUOTE

Send the shaft layout, schedule, diameters, design elevations, reinforcing details and relevant specifications, together with the geotechnical report if available. Note known obstructions, groundwater information and whether the project is a new build or work beside an operating facility. Include the site location, bid due date and requested construction window. If the drawings are preliminary, identify the unresolved details so an estimate can state its assumptions clearly.
